Reading axe’s post on cold and his improper foot gear got me thinking about my favorite pair of boots.
They were work boots, leather with leather laces that wrapped round and round the metal studs. I was about 8 and the boots were hand me downs that had already survived a family friend’s two boys.
I loved those boots. Wrapping the laces just so, rubbing at the blue black leather, admiring the greenish bruise like scuffs. They made me feel tough. I stomped around the woods in them and a button down denim shirt dragging branches and small logs together. Sometimes they were wild horses I was rounding up, sometimes I was a lumber jack. Whatever I was doing I always felt invincible in those old boots.
